What is Mindfulness?

“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.”

~ John Kabat-Zinn

Why Mindfulness?

When we have the skill of mindfulness, we have the ability to walk through our lives informed of the happenings of our inner world, how we relate to ourselves and others/things/situations, and gain insight into our motivations. With that information, we can make conscious choices for living the life we want to live. We won’t have to do something without knowing why we did it. Mindfulness allows us to live with purpose and realize how we relate to others.

Session Overview

Mindfulness training sessions are one hour long. Our first session will always begin with me asking a few questions, like what got you interested in this and what your background is with mindfulness and other spiritual and nonspiritual practices. Depending on your background and goals with it, we can do targeted sessions for you based on what you want to achieve or run through a curriculum much like the one below:

The first session is an introduction to mindfulness. It will start with a short introduction meditation. Then, there will be a teaching on what mindfulness is. After that, there will be a longer body scan meditation. Every session will always have time toward the end to discuss your experience in the meditation and the class as a whole, and how that might relate to your life outside of our sessions. At the end of class, you will be given light homework to continue bite-sized practice on your own in between sessions.

The second session teaches you how to be present. It will begin with a body scan meditation. Then, we will move into lessons on mindful listening and talking, patterns of our mind, 3Ps, and breath as an anchor. Thereafter, there will be a short mindful breathing meditation. As always, we will finish out the class with a discussion and homework.

The third session is a continuation of the patterns of our mind and stress. We will begin with a mindful walking meditation. Then, we will review how your experience and progress has been thus far. Thereafter, there will be lessons on how our minds work, stress, and STOP. We will then meditate on sound. And, end with a discussion and homework.

The fourth session is on kindness. We will begin with a loving-kindness meditation. The lesson will be on how to cultivate kindness and the practice of RAIN, which is putting together everything learned thus far. Then, we will end with a discussion and homework.

The fifth session is the attitude of practice, where you will learn how to be with what you are experiencing, as it is. In this session, we will begin with a loving-kindness meditation. Then, there will be a continuation of teaching loving-kindness, lessons on feeling tones, suffering = pain x suffering, resistance, and resilience/equanimity. We will end with a discussion and homework.

The sixth session is treated as a check-in to see how you feel your experience and progress have been thus far. First, we will begin with an open-awareness meditation. After that, we will discuss your experience with the program and how to continue making progress.

An optional seventh session is on finding compassion within yourself. We begin with a body scan that includes compassion, lessons on compassion, and then a discussion and homework.

An optional eighth session is on resilience/equanimity. We will begin with a breathing meditation that includes compassion, lessons on how you can grow your resilience and strength with strategies, we will have a final meditation on breath awareness. We will close out class with any final thoughts and how to continue making progress.

The goal of our sessions is for you to realize how you relate to yourself and others/things/situations so that you can be better informed to make choices with purpose.

Sessions can be held in person or online, and can be one-on-one or in small groups.
